As a relative newcomer to the Leek area (yes, I live in north Staffordhire), I need some ideas where I can go and take photos in the Moorlands and surrounding areas. As I said in a previous posting, I don't have enough time to go out -- alas: at work during the week, DIY and other activities most weekends. So it would be useful if some places could be suggested -- and I'll target those.

Hi Peter,

At this time of year Rudyard is good for misty shots with the boats and all.

Dimmingsdale, near Alton is also good for Autumn colour and reflections and is good right now. It is best from late morning as it don't get too much sun late in the afternoon.

Always good around the Roaches too, especially late afternoon and evening.

I'm sure others will have some suggestions..........

Thanks for the suggestions. But could you include more details, namely: where exactly are these places? I know where Alton is -- although not been there.

OS map references will do if you wish to be nerdy

Peter,

Can't give OS references.

Rudyard Lake is just outside Leek off the Macclesfield Road (as an asside Rudyard Kipling is named after Rudyard, as his mum and dad had their honeymoon there - it was a Victorian resort in it's day).

Roaches are on the Leek to Buxton Road. It is the end of the Pennines (geographically) and has 3 ranges of Millstone Grit outcrops, the Roaches, Hen Cloud and Ramshaw Rocks.

Not sure of Dimmisdale near Alton, but on an OS map you should be able to find it.

Well, I've been called much worse than a Nerd so it's SK 053 432 (roughly)

Basically, if you drop down to Oakamoor, go over the river Churnet and turn left.

Keep going for 1/4 mile or so and turn left again, that will bring you, eventually, to a car park on your right.

You will know it when you see it because it will probabaly be full...........
